Leigh Suggs received her BFA in studio art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2003. Ms. Suggs recently finished a residency at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina where she expanded on her drawings and sketches. Her new body of work shows confidence and is a marvelous display of the dedication she committed while residing at Penland. This show, “Grid References” is a selection of some of her finest pieces from her residency and the work that was produced shortly after.
“When I was young, I used to see a grid of blue dots when I would close my eyes; they were always royal blue. Closed eye hallucinations are the experience of seeing light without light actually entering the eye. Through research I discovered that it is fairly common for people to see fractals or geometric type shapes. This body of work references the grids and shapes I often see when I close my eyes.” - Suggs
